Northfield Visually Impaired Resource

Where can you find us?

The provision for pupils with a visual impairment was established at Northfield School in September 2001. It is designed to be able to cater both Braille and large print users, within the mainstream curriculum. Equipment to produce the appropriate curriculum material and the department staff can be found in a room off the lower school corridor. The relationship with parents of pupils with a visual impairment is vital to the success of this provision. We have frequent dialogue with parents and we recognise and value their feedback.

Who are we?

We are a friendly department managed by a qualified and experienced teacher for children with a visual impairment. In addition there are learning support assistants who are experienced in supporting the pupils in the classroom. We are all competent Braillists.

What do we do?

Within the school community our aim is to fully include pupils with a visual loss.

This is achieved by: -

  • having a commitment to producing all curriculum material in the appropriate format for the individual pupil.

  • providing a range of specialised equipment for use within the classroom or base.

  • providing classroom support to the pupils and subject teacher, so that the pupil learns alongside their peers.

  • encouraging independent learning, at a pace which is comfortable for the pupil.

  • promoting self awareness, social and personal relationships.

  • raising awareness and involving other pupils in the educational and social needs of pupils with a visual loss.

  • delivering appropriate training to subject teachers on suitable classroom strategies and teaching styles.

  • monitoring and assessing the pupils' visual functioning on a regular basis.

  • liaising with other professionals involved with the pupil.
