Peripatetic
Service for the Visually Impaired
Orientation
and Mobility
To provide comprehensive assessment of orientation and
mobility needs of visually impaired children and young people.
To assess use of functional residual vision (if any)
to aid orientation and mobility.
To provide individual programmes of work to help
increase body awareness and co-ordination in a variety of settings
including road crossings, pedestrian crossings etc.
To provide full training course in use of mobility
aids e.g. guide cane/long cane if considered necessary.
To teach mental mapping skills in specific
buildings/areas e.g. school/college/home/ area/shopping centre.
To teach specific routes to include use of public
transport if necessary e.g. home - school/college/town/recreation
facility.
To facilitate practice in use of learnt skills in
practical settings e.g. shopping.
