CHILDRENS

CHILDRENS SERVICE for the VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Pre-school

In the pre-school years it is the Peripatetic Teacher who provides support in the home environment, as the help given to visually impaired children in the early stages of development is of paramount importance. The work which is undertaken by the Peripatetic Teacher includes: -

Establishing an initial contact with the family of a visually impaired baby.

Liaising with medical, paramedical, nursing and social workers.

Providing information at various stages regarding the educational services available.

Advising parents on development programmes to be undertaken with the child.

Counselling families to the acceptance of a visual impairment and advice for behaviour management.

Advising and involving the parents in assessment procedures.

Accompanying parents to hospital appointments where necessary.

Arranging entry into nursery provision when and where appropriate.

These and other relevant tasks can only be determined in the light of a child’s needs and the many demands on the Peripatetic Teacher.

Children who are multi-handicapped are monitored by the Peripatetic Teacher in the school they attend.
