CHILDRENS

CHILDRENS SERVICE for the VISUALLY IMPAIRED

School Placements

For the school age child there is rarely a definitive answer as to what is the most satisfactory school placement for the visually impaired child. Many different factors interact to determine whether a child can be placed in a Mainstream School with little or no support, or Resource Provision is necessary with the possibility of integration.

Locally the policy has always been in line with Government Policy and the Education Act. Provided a child is succeeding with some support, he/she will attend the neighbourhood school. The support in this instance is the Peripatetic Teacher. If however, a child’s visual impairment is severe and they cannot reach their potential in the local school Resource Bases are provided at:

Primary:

Sunnyside School, Coulby Newham.

Secondary:

Kings Academy, Coulby Newham

These resource bases provide a concentration of equipment together with qualified teachers of the blind and specialist auxiliary staff, but all children have access to mainstream in these integrated settings.
